    SUMMARY

    The employee serves in the classified service for the City reporting directly to the Park and Rec Director.  Employee performs services consistent with managing and overseeing the Big Canoe Creek Nature Preserve managed by the City and the natural assets owned or managed by the City.  The below does not constitute a contract, an offer of employment or any guarantee of future employment with the City.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The following is a non-exhaustive itemization of essential duties and responsibilities of the position.  The same is intended to be descriptive of the types of necessary work but is not, and should not be construed as, an exhaustive list of job functions.

    • Oversees the operations of the Big Canoe Creek Nature Preserve (the “Preserve”)
    • Preserves the intent and natural elements and aspects of the Preserve.
    • Develops trails, educational opportunities, means and methods for improving the Preserve.
    • Markets and promotes the Preserve and develops programs consistent therewith.
    • Works with State, County and local governmental entities to market, maintain and improve the Preserve.
    • Works with the St. Clair County Board of Education to utilize the Preserve to provide outdoor and natural educational opportunities.
    • Works with third party entities such as the St. Clair County EDC to promote and improve the Preserve.
    • Seeks funding available for natural preserve areas such as the Preserve.
    • Develops plans and proposed regulations aimed at improving and protecting the Preserve.
    • Provides other services for the City not inconsistent with the above including providing support and promotion for other City real property assets, programs, recreational endeavors, etc.

     

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    Supervisory responsibilities include the following but are not limited to:

     

    • Responsible for ensuring the City and Preserve meet all necessary requirements for grant funding.
    • Responsible for overseeing any third party contractor, vendor, volunteer or the like associated with the Preserve.
    • Responsible for overseeing all programs developed in concert with or located upon the Preserve.
    • Work in conjunction with the director to report updates to the Park and Rec board and City council.

     

     

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

     

    To perform this job successfully, and individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skill and ability required but does not constitute and exhaustive list of requirements.

     

    Must have knowledge of nature preserves, preferably Forever Wild preserves.

    To include:

     

    Education: 4 year degree in applicable field of study; education component may be satisfied by equivalent experience as further detailed below.

     

    Experience (4 or more years), Knowledge and relationships associated with nature related entities such as Alabama Rivers Alliance, US Fish and Wildlife, Nature Conservancy, Alabama Forever Wild, Alabama Geological, DCNR (Forever Wild) understanding and relationships at State level, Nature Bio blitz experience, river restoration experience.

     

    Experience working with Federal, state and local agencies to develop projects associated with the State Forever Wild Program or similar programs; experience working with other similar preserves, directors, or persons highly integrated and invested in similar assets is preferred.

    Must have knowledge of and experience with applicable regulations associated with maintaining preserves.

     

    Must be willing to travel to visit other sites and preserves, research, and training for the benefit of the City.

     

    Must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle.

     

    Must have the ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates, other government agencies and the general public.

     

    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

     

    Typing, computer, calculator, and skills in using all office equipment.

     

    Ability to operate various equipment associated with this position

     

    Ability to drive and operate utility vehicles.

     

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

     

    Must be in possession of a valid Alabama driver’s license. Must be available to attend appropriate courses and workshops related to improving, maintaining and protecting nature preserves.

    Optimally will have a working knowledge of the Big Canoe Creek Nature Preserve, other Forever Wild preserves, or similar experience / knowledge.

     

    PHYSICIAL DEMANDS:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and stoop. The employee is occasionally required to sit and oftentimes required to stand / walk.  Employee will be on their feet in all conditions, outdoor and for extended periods of time.  

     

    The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision requirements are close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral visions, depth perceptions, and ability to adjust focus.

     

    The work is moderately physical in nature.
